REX Attorneys (“REX” or “the Firm”) has evolved over the years from a solo practice established and styled as M. S. Maajar Law Office in 1991 to a partnership styled Maajar & Rwechungura Law Office to Maajar, Rwechungura and Kameja, Advocates, to Maajar, Rwechungura, Nguluma & Makani Advocates (“MRN&M”). On February 1, 2006, REX Attorneys was born, following the merger of MRN&M with Epitome Advocates (“Epitome”). The merger brought together decades of professional experience, reputation, and legal expertise under one unified firm, marking a pivotal moment in Tanzania’s legal space. The new practice established itself as a prominent legal force in Tanzania with a rich history rooted in the esteemed legacy of REX and Epitome partners and practitioners.
Throughout its history, REX has evolved to adapt to changing legal and regulatory environments in Tanzania and internationally. Significant among these transformations was the firm’s joining a loose Association of Law Firms in Africa identified as LEX AFRICA in which member Law Firms exchanged experiences, underwent practitioners exchange program training, and worked together in cross-border assignments; then an Association of alignment with ENSafrica, Africa’s largest law firm, further broadening REX’s reach and capabilities. This collaboration allowed the Firm to access ENSafrica’s extensive resources and regional network while deepening its commitment to providing world-class legal services in Tanzania. REX partners had to re-organize again in August 2019 due to the enactment of local content laws and regulations, which restricted practice in the natural resources sector to law firms wholly owned by citizens without affiliation to foreign firms. Despite the change, REX retained its team intact, and it has continued to stand as a leading name in corporate and commercial law, with comprehensive expertise in transactional and litigation matters.
REX’s growth over the years has been accompanied by an expanded and diversified clientele, serving key sectors, including banking, finance, energy, corporate secretarial practice, trusteeship services, corporate governance training, natural resources (mining, oil, and gas), telecommunications, property law, employment and labor relations, probate, and white-collar crime, and more. Known for its adept knowledge and experience in handling complex corporate and commercial issues, REX is respected by its corporate clientele. It has a proud record of client retention, some going back to the very early days of the firm’s formation. The firm’s excellence in navigating these sectors has garnered a loyal client base, enabling REX to consistently deliver insightful and effective business-oriented solutions.
Adding to its strength, REX operates closely with its affiliate, REX Corporate Limited (“REX Corporate”). Owned by the firm’s partners, REX Corporate employs all practitioners and manages the Firm’s non-legal functions, allowing REX Advocates to focus exclusively on delivering top-tier legal counsel. This unique arrangement enables REX to maintain operational efficiency and regulatory compliance, ensuring seamless service offerings across all client interactions.
As a leading and recognized name in Tanzania’s commercial and corporate practice space, REX continues to expand its influence across East Africa and beyond, actively engaging in professional networks to provide clients with cross-border expertise and consistent service quality. REX is committed to upholding the highest standards in legal practice. It remains dedicated to fostering long-term client relationships built on a foundation of trust, expertise, and innovative legal solutions.
REX is an integrated corporate legal business deriving its strength from a good team of legal practitioners with an all-round corporate commercial law experience. REX has consolidated its expertise by associating with top legal practice networks which provides the Firm with access to related service providers across the East Africa region, Africa in general and across the world.
The Firm is predominantly a corporate law practice, both transactional and litigation. The Firm’s portfolio has increasingly over the years experienced growth with a new, larger and broader clientele base drawing on the entire goodwill built by the predecessor firms.
