REMINDER TO CLIENTS: FINAL DEADLINE FOR REGISTRATION WITH THE PERSONAL DATA PROTECTION COMMISSION (PDPC)

The Personal Data Protection Commission (PDPC) has issued a final reminder to all public and private institutions in Tanzania that collect or process personal data to complete their registration and obtain a certificate of compliance under the Personal Data Protection Act.

Key Requirement:

Pursuant to Section 14(1) of the Personal Data Protection Act, all data controllers and processors are legally required to register with the PDPC.

Final Deadline: 

The Government has granted a final extension for voluntary registration up to 8 April 2026. After this date, entities that have not registered will be subject to enforcement action in accordance with the law.

Who is Affected?

This requirement applies to all organisations (public and private) that

  1. Collect personal data;
  2. Store personal data; or
  3. Process personal data in any form.

Required Actions:

Affected entities are required to:

  1. Appoint a Data Protection Officer (DPO) prior to registration;
  2. Complete registration through the PDPC online system (https://dataprotection.pdpc.go.tz); and
  3. Ensure ongoing compliance with the Personal Data Protection Act and its Regulations.

Consequences of Non-Compliance:

Failure to register within the prescribed timeline may result in:

  1. Regulatory sanctions and penalties;
  2. Operational and legal risks; and
  3. Reputational exposure.
